Founded in 2011, DieOrdnungDerDinge is a Berlin-based ensemble, formed by actor-musicians and devoted to the development of new forms of music theatre in a highly visual, often playful manner. The ensemble’s strength lies in its versatility, the members having backgrounds in music, composition, acting, and visual art.
In their projects, compositions of sound, speech, objects, light and movement create the music, which only becomes perceptible through the carefully balanced arrangement and ordering of all elements. Visible sounds and audible images give rise to poetic music theatre experiences, that with wit, irony, humour and philosophic undertones open new worlds of perception. The name says it all: musically and artistically the ensemble investigate order and disorder, systems, principles and structures.
They perform internationally at venues such as the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Schauspielhaus, Zurich, Gare du Nord, Basel, Dampfzentrale, Bern, Transparent Sound Festival, Budapest, Théatre ABC, La Chauxde-Fonds a.o. and of course on their home turf, in Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Volksbühne, Grüner Salon, Kontraklang, Heimathafen Neukölln, BAM! Berliner Festival für aktuelles Musiktheater and many others. In 2013 – 2014 the ensemble were awarded a scholarship in the programme “Concerto21” from the Alfred-Toepfer-Stiftung, devoted to exploring new concert formats. In the same year they opened the “Bludenzer Tage Zeitgemäßer Musik” festival.
With the support of the Hauptstadtkulturfonds Berlin they developed the programmes “If you know what I mean – a staged concert about translation” (2014), “His Masters’ Voices – a musical séance” (2016) and “Bestiarium – an interactive musical walk for visitors from six years old” (2018). Currently DieOrdnungDerDinge are working on a radio format in collaboration with Deutschlandfunk Kultur and their latest programme, funded by Berliner Senat and Musikfonds, “Echo Chamber Music” which will be premiered at the Theaterdiscounter, Berlin 2019.
Since 2014 a close and regular collaboration has developed between the ensemble and the PODIUM Festival Esslingen, in which ensemble members have directed, designed and staged concerts. As well as this the ensemble members regularly give lectures and workshops about music theatre and intermediality, a.o. in the HU, Berlin 2010, EVA London 2011, CMMR Conference London 2012 and Budapest BMC 2014 & 2018.
